The history of the Badrinath Temple is vague. According to one belief, the temple was a Buddhist shrine till the 8th century after which Adi Shankara converted it into a Hindu temple. 
          Another belief is that the temple was originally established by Adi Shankara in the 9th century.

What does Badrinath mean?

       Badri refers to a berry that was apparently said to grow abundantly in the area, and nath means "Lord" / "Lord of" as per context in which it is referred. Badri is also the Sanskrit name for the Indian Jujube tree, which has an edible berry. Some scriptural references refer to Jujube trees being abundant in Badrinath.

Is Badrinath temple open now?

     The opening date of Badrinath temple are announced on Basant Panchmi and closing dates will be declared on Vijayadashmi. The closing date of Badrinath temple is ideally on the day of Bhai Dooj which is due on 29 Oct 2019.
